Welcome to Blue Mountain Coops!

A small family blue-mountain-chicken-coopsrun enterprise in Tapanui, West Otago, we supply quality designed and built chicken coops throughout South Island NZ. We specialize in movable chicken tractors (or arks) which are ideal for urban and rural backyards and gardens. Our traditional A-frame hen houses look good too!

Back From China?

Yes, we are finally back and starting to get settled in again.  If you have made an inquiry, we should be getting back in touch with you soon so don't despair.  We will be at the Queenstown Remarkables market on the 29th of October so if you can make it, see you there!

Chicken Tractor?

No, it's not a tractor with a chicken behind the wheel.  Nor is it a the-ark-chicken-tractor-weatherboardtractor with hens on a treadmill under the hood or bonnet.  A chicken tractor, also known as a chicken ark, is essentially just an easily movable chicken coop.  It is called a 'tractor' because it can harness hen's natural scratching behaviour to cultivate a set area of ground, performing some of a tractor's functions on a smaller scale.  For a more detailed description, click here...

Superior Materials & Construction

All our hen coop frames are made of locally sourced tanalized H3.2 and H4 wood to ensure long life especially for those parts which sit on the ground outside in the elements.

Cladding is weatherboard, either H3.2 pressure treated tanalized timber formulated for outdoor use, or Cedar externally treated with linseed oil blends.  Weatherboard features 'lapped' joints, resulting in nearly weatherproof walls and roofs.

Frames are screwed or bolted with zinc plated and/or galvanised fasteners to keep rust to a minimum.  Cladding is screwed to the frames for durability.

wire diameters

We use heavy duty 1.25mm diameter (18g) galvanized welded wire mesh with a 19mm square pattern.  For comparison, the typical welded wire mesh from department stores only has a diameter of 0.7 to 1.0mm.  What does that mean? Our mesh is almost four times as strong and longer lasting.

Flexible Delivery

blue-mountain-coops-deliverySouth Island, New Zealand isn't exactly the most compact population centre in the world, so we try to be flexible in delivering our chicken coops in person; usually the couriers are significantly more expensive, and that's okay with us because we like seeing the NZ countryside and meeting our customers.  Click here for shipping and delivery information.

"The coop is working out well, our chickens have slowly got used to the change in design and now 3 out of 4 of them find their perches at night, they've also learnt to lay in the nest box. We've had very complimentary comments about the look of it from friends calling in, and it's great that we don't have to let the chickens out first thing in the morning as they have space to wander. Looking forward to trying it out on some of the beds in the veggie patch." -- Fiona, Wanaka
