District Council Bylaws

Before going and buying a chicken coop, it's a good idea to check your local council by-laws.  Seldom are coops banned outright, even in the middle of town, but it's good to buy with confidence.  Thankfully New Zealand is one of those places with a more self-sufficient and agricultural attitude; after all it wasn't so long ago that every house in town had its own chicken coop!

In general, most councils permit the keeping of poultry so long as

  • they are contained within suitable housing
  • the numbers are not excessive (usually less than a dozen)
  • they are not a nuisance
  • they are kept away from property boundaries

In many cases roosters are disallowed entirely; in some cases roosters are permitted unless their noise becomes a nuisance.

To minimize the chance of problems, please contact your respective council for guidance.

The links below are either to the district council homepages or else to the specific section of the bylaws or other publications regarding poultry keeping.  Please let us know if you discover a bad link.

"I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with the Massey Featherson 6...We are now getting 5 eggs a day and the chickens seem very contented. They settled in straight away. The slatted floor is working out really well. To start with we put the chickens over the vege garden, then the front lawn. My husband is all keen to try them out on the grass grub patches around the farm." -- Jane, Pukerau
